School Council members talk to their class members about specific issues concerning school life, fundraising, activities around school, opinions about resource purchase and new playground equipment etc.
They can also be approached to discuss any general or individual issues children may want to raise. “As a school councillor we talk to people in our class and in the playground. We can ask them things and they can give us suggestions to talk about at our meeting!”
The school council meet with the Year 5/6 teacher to share their opinions and make decisions. “We have our meetings once a month! We get together and talk about what we want to change about the school”
The teacher then consults with the senior management team to share children’s thoughts. If they are working on a specific project, children may meet with governors; for example, there is a governor sub-committee which is raising money to update the adventure playground and children have shared their opinions both verbally and with drawings with the governors to plan the playground.
“As a school council we mainly plan activities or events and choose new equipment for the school.”

The school has recently brought in external training for this group of young people both in KS1 and KS2 to enable them to respond to their peers in a helpful and supportive way.
“We have mini buds in class one and buddies in class two and three”
“Buddies ask children who haven’t got anyone to play with if they want to play with them!”
“We have a buddy bench next to the shed that children can go sit on and a buddy will come over and talk to them and play”
“It’s really good having buddies”
