Early Years Cohort Attainment Levels

The structure identifies 12 strands of learning giving a broad overview of the literacy curriculum.

Learning objectives are aligned to the 12 strands to demonstrate progression in each strand.

These strands reflect the four aspects of language and link directly to the Early Learning Goals and aspects of English in the National Curriculum.

These aspects are: speaking and listening, reading and writing.

The objectives for each are grouped under two main headings:

• Speak and listen for a wide range of purposes in different contexts – 4 strands which build on communication, language and literacy.
• Read and write for a range of purposes on paper and on screen – 8 strands which build on word recognition and language comprehension and independent creative writing.

Covering these objectives allows children to reach the Early Learning Goals for communication, language and literacy and the appropriate National Curriculum levels at Key Stages 1 and 2.

The 12 strands are as follows.

3. Group discussion and interaction
4. Drama
5. Word recognition
6. Word structure and spelling
7. Understanding and interpreting texts
8. Engaging with and responding to texts
9. Creating and shaping texts
10. Text structure and organisation
11. Sentence structure and punctuation
12. Presentation

When children join Bowes Hutchinsons, they are assessed at entry level and again when they leave early years – as all children are, at all state primary schools.

This gives parents, teachers and assessors a clear indication of the schools performance and the development of children measured against the 12 strands.
